JSO searching for missing toddler on the Southside

A Florida Amber Alert has been issued for a 1-year-old boy after he was reported missing early Friday morning on the Southside.

JSO says Lonzie Barton was inside a vehicle that was stolen from the Ravenwood Apartments in the 8000 Block of Old Kings Road near Philips Highway.

"Time is not on our side, but we're working every angle that we can," said JSO Tom Hackney.

They responded just before 2:30 a.m. to the apartments after they received a call that a man's car was taken with his girlfriend's son inside, JSO said.

JSO said the boyfriend was leaving the apartment with 1-year-old, Lonzie Barton, and his 5-year-old sister to pick up the mother from work. The man went back up to the apartment before he left and the girl went to the apartment and said she was scared, JSO said.

The man went back outside and saw the car drive off, police said.

The car was found about 10 minutes after police responded. However, the child was no longer inside.

"We're very alarmed and very concerned," said JSO spokeswoman Melissa Bujeda. "We are pulling out every effort available to try and find this child."

JSO is treating this as a kidnapping but say there's a chance he could've wandered off.

"I have to assume the worst. Unfortunately, the worst case scenario for me is that somebody abducted this child," Hackney said. "With this time that's gone by we feel like if somebody would've seen that child toddling around, they would've called the police and we would have the child recovered."

Officers have gone door-to-door, searched creeks, wooded areas, and other places around the scenes by air and with K9 units.

Right now, the boyfriend and mother of Lonzie Barton are being interviewed by police and are said to be cooperating. Police tell us they are also going through the boyfriend's recent financial records.

"I want to know everything that happened from the time that this child's mother, around 8 o'clock last night, last saw her child to the time that police were called," Hackney said.

Officers have gone door-to-door, searched surrounding bodies of water, wooded areas, and other places around the scenes by air, K9 and bloodhound units and dive teams.
